Two new businesses coming to 12th Avenue

Wednesday, September 29th, 2010

The Stranger Slog reports that 12th Avenue will soon be home to super delicious Thai take-out. The former Buzz Stop, former Barista Boyz shack will soon be dispensing vegetarian Thai food to go from the owners of Thai Curry Simple in the International District. Word has it that they plan to open in November.

Also open now is an independent furniture shop, Underground Plan, open by appointment only in the basement corner space at 1205 E Pike Street. Looks like they are starting with a set of 20 hand-carved pieces from China. Check out their website for more details and to get in touch.

A little history at 908 12th Ave

Friday, September 24th, 2010

It is amazing how you can pass by some buildings and not realize the place’s history. 908 12th Avenue (near Marion) has a new coat of paint and is set to open as Habibi Restaurant sometime this year. The CD News has more details about the building’s history as Doc Hamilton’s restaurant and “possibly the most notable speakeasy” back the 1930s. I absolutely love the historic photo of Doc Hamilton’s. I wonder if the new owner is willing to consider a colorful awning out front and restoring that charming roof detail?

Given the popularity of the urban speakeasy, maybe it is time to fix up the basement and bring the original speakeasy back to life? I had the chance to tour the building many months ago and took some pictures of the basement. It was in pretty rough shape but still had a few details that hinted at the place’s past.

the old bar?

The only interior photo I found (after a very quick search) was this photo of the upstairs from 1932 thanks to the Black Heritage Society of Washington. At the time, the bar was known as the 908 Club.

New bike lanes on Union and bike boxes on Madison

Thursday, September 23rd, 2010

SDOT is in the process of painting new bike lanes on Union Street from Broadway to 14th as noted on the attached drawings. More exciting though are the bike boxes that will soon be painted on Madison Street at 12th Avenue.

A bike box is located right behind the crosswalk at intersections and allows bikes to pedal ahead of cars waiting at red lights. Bikes waiting in front of cars are much easier to see and hopefully a lot less likely to get hit by cars taking right turns on the red lights.

Example of a bike box in Portland

Looks like more bike boxes are planned for Pine Street at 12th. Check out the Seattle Bike Blog for more info on other bike boxes coming in around Seattle.

Park(ing) Day on 12th Avenue

Friday, September 17th, 2010

Thanks to folks that stopped by our little park on 12th Avenue near Watertown today. I think we were able to spread the good word about the need for more open, public space (and less for cars) in urban areas. We also had the fantastic design for the James Court Park to share with people passing by.

Thanks a bunch to Feet First for organizing the city permits and to Ragen & Associates for donating the use of some beautiful potted plants for the day.

12th Avenue Stewardship Committee Meeting – James Court Park meeting recap

Wednesday, September 15th, 2010

The 12th Avenue Stewardship Committee had another great meeting last night about the future James Court Park.

The 12th Avenue community applied for Opportunity Fund grant money to build the James Court woonerf adjacent to the park. We should hear back regarding this funding by Thanksgiving 2010. Parks and the community has decided to hold off on further design work/preparations for the James Court Park until we find out if we will be getting funding for the woonerf as well. Design work can them move forward in tandem for both projects (hopefully).

Previous design ideas for the Park from the past two community meetings were further refined.
• A low retaining wall was added on the east side of the park. This would hold the rain garden (which will be able to absorb all run-off from the paved park) and give the park less of a “sloping” feel since the ground slopes down to the east.
• The blue “pillow” in the middle of the park will be covered in that squishy playground material and provide various levels for sitting, playing, climbing, or performance space. It will range from 6”-30” high.
• The “cloud” art piece will feature stainless steel convex mirrors (various diameters from 24”-42”) and will be 15-18 feet off the ground.
• The paving material will be sandblasted concrete. This saves money by not using specialty pavers and will also be easier for Parks to maintain.
• Lights will be found throughout the park, crating an even lighting scheme. Lights will not be reflected up into the cloud to respect the neighbors and prevent any errant light from reflecting out into the street.
• The park will include stationary tables with movable chairs, likely attached with cables to the tables so that they don’t get stolen.
• One concern was related to pigeons enjoying the park a little too much and making a mess under the cloud feature. The design team is looking into anti-pigeon measures.

Overall, the community members in attendance were very pleased with the final designs and expressed excitement about moving forward. Be sure to put your thinking caps on and start brainstorming names for the new park!

Former Pizza Time building to be demolished at 12th and Yesler

Tuesday, September 14th, 2010

Seattle Housing Authority is planning to demolish the building on the northwest corner of 12th and Yesler (formerly Pizza Time). Demolition should happen sometime between mid-October to mid-November. SHA promises to maintain the site and keep it free of litter.

The site will likely sit empty for some time, although SDOT has mentioned that they are considering part of the site for a streetcar barn for the First Hill Streetcar.

12th Avenue park for Park(ing) Day

Monday, September 13th, 2010

This Friday is Park(ing) Day, a worldwide event where on-street parking spaces are converted to mini urban parks for the day. The event demonstrates the need for more open space in urban areas. The 12th Avenue Stewardship Committee will be hosting a “park” on 12th Avenue near E Cherry Street – right in front of Watertown Coffee & Saloon. Come by this Friday between 9am and 3pm to check it out. We’ll be hanging out all day and sharing information on the design of the future James Court Park.

I’d like to give a shout out of thanks to Feet First for organizing Park(ing) Day this year and handling all the City permitting requirements. Thanks!!

James Court Park meeting – Tuesday, Sept. 14th

Friday, September 10th, 2010

Please join the Parks Department and the James Court park design team for our third (and final I believe) public meeting on the James Court park design. We ended the last meeting with some really cool designs and great ideas for the park. Be sure to come to this one to see more finalized concepts! (And we’ll be sure to have snacks on hand at this meeting!)

Here’s a recap of the last meeting.

12th Ave in the news

Thursday, September 9th, 2010

There’s a lot of activity on the horizon on 12th Avenue. As always, thanks to the CHS blog for the first hand information.

Another restaurant on 12th?? Dawson’s Plumbing, next to the Packard Building, is going out of business and the building has apparently been sold. Rumors abound that an un-named restaurant will be moving into the space.

How energy efficient is your home? EnergySavvy moves into the Coho building next to Northwest Film Forum. The “clean-tech incubator” designs software to help us find ways to increase the energy efficiency of our homes.

Pies Pies Pies! And perhaps a little bit of old new, High Five Pies will be opening a pie shop in the corner retail space of Trace Lofts at 12th and Madison. My only request…please have one of those awesome revolving pie cases.
