5:45 to 6:15pm – Bridging the Gap Application

6:15 to 6:50pm – A Conversation with County Councilmember Joe McDermott

The 12th avenue Neighborhood is now within the new King County Council District 8. The 12th avenue Stewards committee welcomes Councilmember Joe McDermott for a discussion of issues and projects in the area.  In particular focus will be the redevelopment plans for the King County Youth Detention Center. 6:50 to 7pm  – Denny Substation and Power Lines

Discussion of City Light proposal to build a new substation and to run transmission lines above ground using large poles (“possibly 100 ft” tall) along 14th Ave, E Spruce, and 12th Ave S. Please note the change in the agenda:  Chip Nevins of Seattle Parks and Recreation has to cancel his appearance.  We hope to continue the discussion of a new or improved park space on the current King County Youth Services center block.  We hope to reschedule Chip for the December Stewards meeting.

The 12th Avenue Neighborhood Festival Needs You!

The 3rd Annual 12th Avenue Neighborhood Festival is coming up this Sunday, August 12, from 11am to 5pm.  The Festival is a free street fair on 12th Ave between Pike and Union organized by Capitol Hill Housing with help from the local small business community.  The Festival includes 40 booths full of local businesses and nonprofits along with a small music stage and a variety of activities.  Last year we had about 3,000 people attend.

Neighbors, we need your help to make the Festival a success.  We need volunteers to help with set up and take down, to greet Festival attendees, and to keep a count of the crowd (look below for time and task specifics).  Each 2 hour shift earns you a free meal ticket to use with any festival food vendor, and you will also be automatically entered into our raffle to win gift certificates to local businesses (see list of food and other vendors here).  It’s also just a great opportunity to meet other people from the neighborhood and listen to the sweet bands, that Neumo’s lined up.

1st shift – 9am to 11am (6 volunteers)

  • Table and chair set up for 40 booths
  • Balloon and banner set up for both entrances
  • Electricity and handwashing station set up

2nd shift – 11am to 2pm (12 volunteers)

  • Keep fire lanes open and unoccupied by vehicles
  • Greet, hand out materials, and count attendees at welcoming tables
  • Stand by waste bins and educate attendees about composting and recycling

3rd shift – 2pm to 5pm (12 volunteers)

  • Keep fire lanes open and unoccupied by vehicles
  • Greet, hand out materials, and count attendees at welcoming tables
  • Stand by waste bins and educate attendees about composting and recycling

4th shift – 5pm to 7pm (10 volunteers)

  • Tables and chair take down for 40 booths
  • Balloon and banner take down for both entrances
  • Electricity and handwashing station takedown
  • Work with Cleanscapes to verify and sort waste from compost, recycling, and trash bins (these volunteers will get extra benefits – contact Alex for details)

We ask that all volunteers report in 15 minutes before their shift starts in order to facilitate easy shift changes and to guarantee time for a short volunteer orientation.  Volunteers will be provided with water and snacks (along with a free meal ticket) during their shift.

Call Out to the Locals: 12th Avenue Neighborhood Festival

Calling all Local Businesses and Community Organizations!

The 3rd Annual 12th Avenue Neighborhood Festival will be Sunday, August 12, 2012, from 11am to 5pm.  Note the different start and end time from last year.

Booths for the Festival have sold faster this year than ever.  About 50% of the booth spaces are already filled.  Don’t delay in getting your forms in for what promises to be the biggest turnout ever for this fun neighborhood event.

Help us clean up 12th Avenue!

Capitol Hill Housing is working with the Capitol Hill Chamber of Commerce to plan cleanup work on 12th Avenue as part of The Clean Sweep. The Clean Sweep, a neighborhood street clean that covers Broadway and 12th Avenue, is on Saturday, May 12th from 10am to noon.  Volunteers (that means you!) are invited to gather at Cal Anderson Park at 10am for a pre-clean up breakfast and inspiring speeches from local elected officials.  Everyone will get equipped to clean, put together in teams (you’re welcome to create your own), and sent out to clean up areas. After a few hours hard work, volunteers will gather back at Cal Anderson Park for lunch and musical entertainment.

12th Avenue – A Year In Review

It has been a great year with tons of cool stuff happening on and around 12th Avenue.

We’ve had a bunch of great new businesses open and/or make the move to the 12th Avenue corridor including Chungee’s, Octo Sushi, Velocity Dance, Unicorn, Grim’s, Barre3, Local Vine, High Five Pie, Eltana Bagels, Phoenix Art Restoration, Thai Curry Simple, Cobra Lounge, Dixon’s Used Furniture, and Jolie Nails. Of course, this also comes with the loss of some favorite local places like WaterTown, Grey Gallery, Balagan Theatre, Dawson’s Plumbing, and the Color Store. But it is hard to deny the exciting energy behind the new restaurants opening up on 12th between Pine and Madison.

12th Avenue Neighborhood Festival

The 12th Avenue Initiative can also celebrate our successful support of the neighborhood business district, especially after the fantastic 12th Avenue Neighborhood Festival back in August.  Neighborhood communication and publicity, through this website and 12th Avenue walking map, the Pike Pine Triangle walking map and the 12th Avenue Facebook page have helped us spread the word about events and happenings in the neighborhood.

James Court Park design

The 12th Avenue neighborhood has been a busy place over the past year, with designs for a new park at 12th and E James Court completed and ready to start construction early this spring.  We’re also just waiting for final word on funding for the proposed James Court woonerf ( Woonerf Background Info), which could be the first official woonerf in the city and a valuable public space for the neighborhood.  12th Avenue is also home to 5 benches along the corridor, helping to create a more pedestrian-friendly streetscape.

Struggling through the rough economy, 12th is now showing signs of activity in the real estate market with the construction of the Douglas at 12th and E Cherry (a partnership between the Seneca Group and Seattle University).  Capitol Hill Housing recently took one giant step closer to making our 12th and E Jefferson (12th & Jefferson Summary Sheet) project a reality with a successful rezone (from 40 feet to 65 feet) from the Seattle City Council and funding commitment from Washington Works!  Look for a great new development to start construction at that corner in 2011!  Future redevelopment of Yesler Terrace and the King County Youth Detention Facility are also on the horizon and will create big changes and fantastic opportunities for the 12th Avenue community.

Although the City did not choose the 12th Avenue loop option for the First Hill Streetcar route, we are still involved in streetcar station planning, mitigation, and, as always, advocating for a bus route for 12th Avenue.

Keep an eye out in 2011 for more activity on 12th Avenue and in the neighborhood business district as we partner with the Capitol Hill Chamber of Commerce, celebrate neighborhood businesses with great events and promotions, and continue to engage on community issues.

Many thanks are due to Kevin Long of Urban Wilds who did a fantastic job on design and fabrication of the granite stones as well as installation on the sidewalk. We also want to thank Daniel Mihalyo of Lead Pencil Studio for help with the design, offering up a workspace, and general assistance with the project, Greg Lewis for help with installation, 12th Avenue Iron who fabricated the bench legs, Kate Leitch at the Seattle Department of Transportation for helping us with City permits, and to each property and business owner who supported this project.
